I’m watching this at a pizzeria that’s playing jazz over the speakers and let me tell you, watching the shadow man crawl onto Mary’s bed while jazz plays in the background is extremely jarring

Some additional interpretations:
- the way she constantly checks the locks is an allegory for ocd compulsions; she's looking for a way to escape her anxiety and delusions, but it's repetitive and she never gets anywhere with it
- in later episodes when the phone/doorbell is ringing but she can't answer, I think that's an allegory for social anxiety. She wants contact with other people but she's too consumed by her own mind
- I think the garden could also represent addiction, because a lot of people with mental illness will rely on substances like alcohol to "help" them. Mary is increasingly spending more time in the garden, and in "intruder" she gets sick at the end. The woman in white is there to tell her to get help, both outside of the house *and* outside of the garden. I think she appears there because Mary's other demons are suppressed when she's in the garden, but it's still not her right mind. Which I believe is also why she's so defensive toward the woman in white. Mary has to admit she's unwell to be able to get help from her.

Honestly this series reminds me of my social anxiety and general anxiety. I am afraid to leave the house and feel trapped. I am incredibly uncomfortable with who I see in the mirror. I never get restful sleep and feel like my anxiety acts like a monster plaguing me and refusing to let me rest.

I was thinking that shadow Mary might represent her depression, while Maria represents some sort of eating disorder or other body image. The shadow man could very clearly be anxiety.
