I've never seen CHARIOTS in 1.981 when I was 7, but this summer 2024 and was amazed by the script and the full movie...

and I regret not having seen it 40 years ago.

Saw this movie in the theater as a 10 year old, and this scene (along with the timeless musical score) have always stayed with me. Brilliant.

This was an event which really happened involving Eric Liddell. He was knocked down early in the 400 meters of a regional competition in 1923. He got to his feet and managed to run down the field and win.

One of the best films ever made. For many reasons.

I too remember the BUZZ around this film. Independent features, especially foreign produced, never used to stand a chance at the Oscars next to the corporate Hollywood produced features and this movie, along with BREAKING AWAY, broke the mold for smaller independents to steal the award nominations from then on....

This was the first vhs movie I got to watch as a kid. The whole getting back on your feet part, not accepting defeat - I embraced that.
At times it’s manifest itself in less than positive ways, such as in situations of being turned down.
But overall - positive effect film

And in case you had any doubt, Harold Abrahams, he could take you on any day, any race, and beat you!
This is one of my favorite scenes.
Eric gets up, runs and wins. Then we have that shot of “Oh, S****!” in Abraham’s’ eyes.

The movie dramatizes Liddell's decision not to run in the 100 meter race. The schedule was known months in advance, the decision to run in the 400 meters instead of the 100 meters was made months in advance, and Liddell trained for the 400 meters. As this clip shows, Liddell was an exceptional 400 meter runner.

Jesus, he ran for all of 20 second and practically had a heart attack. He wouldn't last long these days.

great runner... but more importantly he had guts & he had heart. The 400 is not for the weak at heart

Wow, this really did happen. It's like he would throw his head back and be turbo charged. And he was a modern time Saint too!

A runner accidentally trip him from the race track
That's pretty odd.

abrahams was college educated, liddel was pure raw talent he would have murdered him over 100 metres every time, if it wasnt for his beliefs . abrahams got lucky he didnt run

It would've been better if he'd tackled the guy who knocked him over.
