The Rudigar roll, or fire roll, is believed to have been invented by a German survival expert named Rudiger Nehberg during WWII. It is simply wood ash or rust wrapped in cotton, then rolled under pressure until friction (to my understanding) creates enough heat for the cotton to ignite.
In this video I start out by unrolling a cotton ball. I use approximately three inches of the roll. I place about a half teaspoon of wood ash onto the cotton and roll it by hand as tightly as I can on a flat board. Spread some wood ash onto the board for traction. I then roll it tighter under my hand. I use another board, smeared with wood ash for traction, and continue rolling the cotton in one direction to make sure that it will not unroll when I begin the rolling process applying pressure. It takes about twenty five to thirty back and forth rolls to produce enough heat to ignite the cotton. If you do not see smoke, roll some more. Once you see smoke you can gently loosen the cotton to allow air to the ember. Be patient and allow the ember to grow. This technique will require practice to learn the nuances of roll tightness, pressure, and number of rolls. #fire #survival #camping #outdoors #bushcraft
