Having a relative who works in funeral services, I’ve seen this done many times. It’s becoming pretty popular within Black funerals. As someone else pointed out, the song “I Shall Wear a Crown” is usually sung/played during this process. When my mom passed we considered doing this but eventually decided not to. Instead, during the ‘sealing of the bier’ aka, when she was closed, we sung “Let the Church Say Amen”
Thanks for sharing this Kari, love that you’re intentional in sharing the customs/meanings/traditions behind certain funeral rituals.

Being a black African American we have the most sermonious funerals ever. They are celebrations. If you have never been to one you will be amazed. Praise God

Many years back, (30+), I remember participating in a few Crown ceremonies. We’d put down a few bottles of Crown Royal at gatherings. That’s the only Crown ceremony I knew. Ahhhh….it was smooth.

Kari, thank you for giving the information of the crowning ceremony. I have watched several Afro-American services often wondered the meaning behind this. Now I know, thank you again.

I've never heard of this. I have seen several crowns/tiara's placed on top of the casket at the cemetery before the vault was closed. Thanks for the info.

I saw a video of a young girls' service where the usher was walking up the aisle with her crown. I'd never seen it before, but it's so beautiful. What a beautiful way to remember a loved one and to comfort the family that the deceased is resting in heaven!

I was unsure of the meaning, but I experienced one at my Daughters Great Grandmother's service and wanted to educate myself to explain it to them. Thank you for the clear description and understanding!
