Sony A1II Hands-On Review (vs A1 vs A9III)

Hey everyone! Today I have a hands on review of the new Sony A1II. I test this camera out for both photo and video. During the portrait photoshoot, I share the 100% crops of the straight out of camera JPGs. I am using the new Sony 28-70mm f2 GM (which I have also uploaded a review video of today!), the Sony 85mm f1.4 GMII and Sony 35mm f1.4 GM. For the video tests with the cats and birds I am using the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 GMII and 200-600mm. Is this the upgrade you've finally been waiting for with the A series?? Let me know what you think in the comments!

Thank you to Sony Australia for loaning me this camera, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

As a wildlife photographer the combination of 50mp sensor to enable cropping and pre-capture for those fast moving moments is just what I wanted. The better ergonomics, multi-tilt screen and AI Autofocus are also great improvements. I have the A1ii on order to replace my A1 mark 1.

Very disappointed, as a A1 owner in Sony. They crippled our camera with a lack of firmware support, once the a7IV debuted and withheld “Animal/Bird Eye Support in Video” and “Focus Breathing Comp”. They have still never provided us with Animal Eye tracking in Video, while the old a7C got that firmware update in 12/21. They will do the exact same thing with this body when the a7V debuts in 2025. I am not investing any further into Sony, as a Sony Pro Member, until I see that they change their firmware policy for the Flagship. Love your work Julia & Dan!!!

Very informative, thanks! As an owner of the original a9, this was just the comparison I was looking for.

Fantastic review as usual. I have the A9 III and A7RV, both bodies which I picked up in May. I almost shot the A9 III exclusively most of the summer and have just recently started shooting my A7RV more. When I heard about the release of the A1 Mark II I became quite interested in learning about the features and am glad to hear that Sony has brought this line up to speed with their most current bodies. For my needs the A9 III and A7RV are quite competent in their strengths. I think the A1 Mark II strikes me as almost a nice blend of the strengths of the 2 aforementioned systems. Certainly with the new AI AF and auto subject recognition it would be a super system to shoot if you planned on just taking only one camera body with you.

you can't see a photographer looking at a screen while he's shooting, it gives you the shivers

Sony has now perfected their Rolling Shutter Mirrorless camera. Not big upgrades to the A1-ii so its still worth keeping your A1 and using it for the next 10 years.

Did you adjust camera jpeg settings? i noticed that A12 is more contrasty and more color and cooler tones vs A93

Dear Julia, could you please give us your opinion: I really loved the original A1 for it's colour science. It was finally a pleasing look and I consistently found better than Canon (for the first time). Comparing your side by side images, I get the impression that the mark 2 is back to intensive greens and less pleasing skin colours. I put my A1 up on eBay and ordered the mark 2, but now I am really nervous if that's the right decision. Did you feel the need to edit the mark 2 pictures more?

I thought at first moment the auto video crop was mad but then you mentioned the 8k capability so that is still like 4k(?) video and this blows me away. I barely even do video.... Kinda wanna use that

How did you record the display of the camera? I didn’t see an external recorder connected to the camera. 🤯

I just wish that the Auto-Subj Recog. will come as a software update to the A7Cii. A7CR, A7IV and A7RV

This is such a let down. There was no reason to bring this to market. Its just frustrated a load of A1 users who invested the first time. A1 was compromised and became out of date pretty quickly and the same will happen with this when the A7V comes out. Sony have developed a camera that has a very small market and thats why they have not invested in it. No good firmware updates and nothing to write home about. It's over £2K more expensive than the R5II and there is nothing that you can point at that justifies the extra price. You certainly couldn't tell it in image quality and the autofocus is not as good now with Canon bringing Active tracking and eye control autofocus innovation.

So they are refreshing all the models by enhancing colour science and few feature updates and throwing an Ai chip ?

I am happy with my a7iii, lets see what new they may bring for a7v or more or less it would be throwing an Ai chip in a7iv body and make it a7v ?
