Then how do we explain the lavish temples? If anything Christianity is about creating prosperity to be shared with the needy. The virtue is in not needing material things to support your spiritual vitality, not in giving up your power.

I wasnt expecting to agree so much, but I've seen this behavior repeated many times by many different people under many different scenarios, totally unrelated to religion, if this is one of humanities recurring themes as a way to deal with hardship and its represented in tales and stories i dont think its a stretch to think its also capable of finding its way into religion

Well that's like saying the only people who need religion are losers who suffer and make shit up based on bitterness. Except, the Christian tradition made it a key point to depict wealthy, materially successful individuals coming to faith out of free choice such as Francis of Assisi, St. Josaphat etc
That is even ignoring the fact that the church itself became very materially successful and yet the ethics it taught and inspired hardly changed
Christianity teachings are not for the downtrodden, they are mainly to be taught to the wordly so that they can start to empathize and help the downtrodden. It's primary goal is teaching compassion to the oppressors.

I’ve always thought that Nietzsche mistook service for slavery.
A slave is forced to serve
A free good person chooses to serve.

Nietzsche got it completely backwards. Jesus himself explains that if he wanted he could have started an armed rebellion but he freely chose to be at the service of all

The GREAT Nietzsche! The slow-mo. lunatic of philosophy. As an atheist, I have to say it's funny that his critique of Christianity as a "slave morality" omitted the fact that one of its earliest converts was the mother of the then Roman emperor! And that the wives of wealthy Romans joined the early church en masse. And that it literally became the official corporate religion of the most powerful empire the world had ever seen or would see until the British & American empires millennia later. Nietzsche was full of shit.

bizare critique. God punishes us accordingly and sometimes he needs us to suffer to force our growth
