Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re going to be discussing Goblins & the Goblin Rebellion- lore from both Harry Potter AND Hogwarts Legacy.

It probably wouldn’t surprise you to know that the wizarding community didn't treat Goblins with the utmost respect at all times.

Pure bloods outright hated them.

But even the most progressive members of the wizarding world felt a general mistrust for the tiny, monstrous humanoid-creatures.

And all of those negative interactions built up over the years, burdening wizard-goblin relations, until the Goblins rebelled.

In fact, If we open up our history books, and look back at the records of Goblins in the wizarding world, we’ll find a series of great rebellions centered around one common theme: to be treated with equal respect.

What were these rebellions? And what type of impact did they have on the wizarding community? That’s what we’ll discuss today.

First, let’s go over a bit of Goblin-wizard history.

If I have this right, Goblins essentially controlled the entire economy of the wizarding world, through their management of the banking system, and also the minting of the wizarding coinage. Instead of resorting to violence, which seems always to have gone badly for the Goblins, why didn't they pinch off the monetary supply, and force Wizards to use legal British, that is muggle money? It seems that the Goblins would have had the Wizards over a barrel and could have negotiated from power. Think of how many affluent Wizards, like the Malfoys for instance might have faced financial ruin.

For a species so gifted at crafting things, their bank is really quite wobbly.

I feel like, in part, the wizards were probably afraid of giving goblins even more power by teaching them and allowing them use wands. Goblins were excellent crafters, hoarders of precious metals and coinage and basically controlled the economy of the wizarding world. They already had a lot of influence, despite no human openly admitting to it. Giving them wands would've tipped the scales even more and leave wizards in a precarious and dependent position. What would they have to offer at that point that goblins couldn't do? More over, given the goblins had a particular opinion on ownership, would they have shown the same considerations towards their human teachers and craftsmen?

On the flip side, if wizards knew about the goblin's stance on "ownership" and didn't agree with those terms, why did they kept making deals with them and purchasing their things? Alternatively, they could've made contracts specifically designed for these deals, stating the goblin crafter would revoke any and all ownership over the item after the purchase or vice-versa; that the item would return to their original crafter after the death of whoever purchased it.

In a way goblin's concept of ownership is quite similar to patent laws pertaining to intellectual property in the US where an author for example can sell the rights to their books for a studio to adapt. However after a period of time has passed, the patent will expire and the ownership rights to said property would revert back to the original owner or their heirs. Such legal wrangling of patents for intellectual property recently came up after Amazon purchased the rights to the Lord of the Rings, yet the Tolkein estate still claim rights to the books that have recently reverted back to them, and both sides have been getting into some legal entanglements over who owns the patents and can do what with it.

This is why I like the gangster like goblin Gnarlak portrayed by Ron Perlman; carrying a pair of wands in shoulder holsters like a 20's gangster xD

While the wizards need to treat them as equals the goblins need to concede that once something is purchased it is no longer theirs.

After the first couple of transactions that left goblins with the short end of the stick (from their perspective), why didn't they readjust their pricing metric? If a goblin knows that the humans are going to keep the item for several generations, why not simply charge more? Instead of "renting" the item for 1 lifetime, why not increase the price for 3 or 4 lifetimes, or however long goblins live for

I was curious if you could release a video going over how the Goblet of Fire makes its decisions.
.You could potentially go over a few potential theories. I have been curious about this for a long time and I would love to know your opinion.

Shout out to everyone who is currently getting to know about Ranrok while playing Hogwarts Legacy.

It's a bit weird how being master craftsman that they are, goblins haven't been able to figure out wandlore on their own. When you consider how a muggle like James Stewart was able to figure out how to make wands from scratch, then surely a skilled goblin craftsman could make wands through experimentation, or even create their own versions of magic channelling tools and weapons that are superior to wands.

I would love a story based on a Wizard who see's Goblins and House Elves as equals, and has a Merry band of misfits that follow him around. I would loosely base it on the legend of Robin Hood I think. Would make for a great story.

I would very much like to know who composed your theme and background music. Whoever it was did a near perfect parody of John Williams’ film score without copying it exactly. I’m a professional musician and arranger, and I think it’s absolutely brilliant.

Nice video! (as usual) If there is enough lore, can you do the history of Gringotts?

This is a story of 2 species who both did not do enough to get over their differences.
On surface level it is easy to just fault the wizards due to them having the upper hand in the power hierarchy but the goblins also did their part at hoarding their own secrets and selling their creations with an one sided "contract" that was only in their head.
This would had of course gotten better if the wizards genuinely tried to offer an honest compromise that benefit both parties equally.

If I recall is well goblins won't teach wizard kind how to make metal either. Metal is meant to repel or weaken magic.

While I don’t agree with the wizards treatment of goblins as a citizen. I can understand the reasons for a lot of the wizards actions. Goblins came across as very power hunger and greedy. They refused to share their knowledge of magical artefacts and metal use. While demanding the wizards to share their knowledge of wand use. Additionally they refused to adapt their culture to be able to integrate into the wizard society. Such as for example changing their concept of ownership. Yet they expect the wizards to give them more rights and power(governmental positions), when they won’t do the same. It is not hard to see them as greedy and cunning creatures when they behave like this. So I honestly agree with the wizards decision to limit the amount of power they can have(Wands and political seats), as the goblins repeatedly proved themselves to be unworthy of receiving access to the wizards resources. I do however disagree with how the wizards began to belittle and mistreat them as time went on. Still unless goblins are willing to compromise, they can’t expect humans to compromise. That is just being greedy and selfish.
