Her explanation seems like a front to cover the actual problem. Disney probably gave them a tight deadline, and they didn't want to invest efforts into experimenting or revamping the 2D animation pipeline to the current day.

Ironic that 3D actually has more limitations than 2D, since you are often restricted to the mesh of the object and it takes highly skilled animators to create the fun aspects of 2D in 3D.

That whole "limitations" thing is such bullshit. Jennifer Lee doesn't know what she's talking about. 2D Hand Drawn Animation is just as capable as 3D CGI animation, and as the Renaissance era films proved, when hand-drawn meets CGI elements and they're done right, the final result is often amazing. 2D Hand Drawn Animation deserves to make a comeback. It's still being done regularly in places like Europe and Japan, so why can't the US do it?

They just don't wanna admit that 2D costs more purely because 3D studios aren't as heavily unionized. 2D isn't "limited" if you're willing to invest the time and money into paying people to actually make it, so to have Disney cop out on the 100th anniversary is pretty damn telling. They suck at planning long term, they don't want to pay their employees what they're worth, and they don't care about the quality of their productions beyond its ability to make them a half-decent profit.

The limitations aren't because of the 2D, they come from the fact that Disney just doesn't have that much people specialized in 2D anymore and all of their incredibly smooth animations from today's series are made by other studios from Korea and other countries.

So, she's telling us: we are celebrating a hundred years of artistry and still cannot find a good story, dedication, a good script, and not even a good art style. Nice homage.

I'm sure it's going to come back to 2D, but from independent creators or small companies. It would be nice. There are plenty of short animations out there, so amazingly done! I just hope they can unleash all that creativity one day, without having to worry about the money.

There are no limitations of what you can do on screen... With hand drawn animation, your imagination is the limit, especially if you combine it with 3d like many old Disney films did.
