It's based on the story Flatland. There's a film adaptation available on YouTube.

That episode was a reference to the book called Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Favourite part of the episode are the tyre screech sounds as the professor drifts the planet express

There is a game in development that kind of explores that in a 3d/4d context. The game is called Miegakure, unfortunately it's still in development and has already been for a long time

Honestly, this show is the best kid's show with some adult humor only they can understand

The episode was inspired specifically by a novel called Planiverse, not Flatland as some of the other comments are mentioning.
Planiverse came about a century later with the same idea; but while Flatland was about society and life in a bubble, Planiverse was about the science behind how a 2D universe might develop and how life might adapt to that.

The book even devoted a whole chapter just to explain how gravity can't exist in a two-dimensional universe because there wouldn't be enough matter to generate such an influence for a planet to hold together. So it had to invent a workaround to explain why planets in fact _do_ exist in that 2D world.

"came up with" as if this wasn't an obvious Flatland reference. Don't get me wrong, it's still an awesome episode exploring a 2D world can almost always be attributed to Flatland.

Also for more dimensional fun. I recommend playing 4D Toys.

"You think your life is rough? Imagine living in the second dimension. A flat mind in a flat world with flat dreams..."

I don’t think they would be able to turn around. You would have to rotate in order to see behind yourself.

Flatland expands on this concept a lot more.

It is interesting how they moved to the 4th dimension and then to the 2nd. The topic is interesting

There is that one book, and the movie based on it, called Flat World. Im sure this episode is based on it vaguely.

i feel like this is inspired by the very first episode of the old hungarian cartoon "Mézga Aladár különös kalandjai"(the strange adventures of Aldar Mezga)

Technically, they were already in 2D.

There is literally an old Hungarian animated series called mezga family. And it has an episode like this. It's from the 90s (I think not 100% sure)
