Before and during a 50 year career as a naval architect, history interested me a great deal (my college major was archaeology). You had me when you asked if WW I was inevitable, and polling your students and they all said yes, but going further back, your own professor said no! I would have lapped that up. Let me say I don't think WW I was inevitable, but once it happened, it made the 20th century the train wreck it eventually became. It was the dominating event of the century. I look forward to following your coming episodes. Oddly, I haven't seen either of your texts, but I read Dreadnought and Guns of August (kind of long ago so my memory of them might not be exact). Following with interest!

I just finished a (weeks-long) marathon listen-through of every episode and video The Great War has ever made so far. What a series, and what a fascinating perspective it presented to me on a conflict I already thought I knew a whole lot about.

My husband was a Tarheel. I lost him to a cardiac arrest and moved at that time to Texas and laid out a huge new career. We were both Psychologists and lost him when he was in school to become a Psychiatrist. I miss him still over 30 years ago. I’m now retired but lived in Houston and met you at the Port of Houston and you assisted me in understanding Marine laws and the function of all the Branches. My Grandfather was in WWII and my Dad was in WWII.
I bought a sailboat, a 24’ Mirage with a C&C hull. I taught myself to sail, as well as my son and 3 foster kids. One was from Norway. Anyway, I thank you so many times for what you trained me. ❤❤❤I’m Patricia 79 yo. Retired.

I've been watching your channel for a couple of years and something about you has always felt familiar. Not the "I've met this person before" kind of thing, but "he reminds me of someone" kind of thing. And now I remember who.

Mr. Cullen, my 7th grade history/civics teacher. He kept the entire class engaged, pretty much the entire time his class was in. The way you speak reminds me of him. I had a fondness for history before him, but learned a whole lot from him and deepened my love of the topic. He was one of my two favorite teachers. I can't believe I didn't realize it before today.

Thanks for all you do!

We will not ever see wars like WWI and WWII ever again. If we do not learn from the past... We only have ourselves to blame. Sounds like a Great Series Sal!

I really like how Yale and Stanford and some others post entire lecture series on their youtubes. 22-23 1-hour videos is a perfect size playlist to keep on loop.

I had always thought of World War Zero as being the Seven Years War, tbh, as it was the first conflict fought on a global scale.

I'm excited to follow along. I'm a rabbit hole now about lead up to civil war. I'm amazed at how slow Mail was back then. Officers making big decisions with no info or wrong info.

Really pleased to hear you talk about WW1 starting in Asia, I was struck by how little this was discussed during the recent Centennial here in the UK. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Many thanks for combining both wars into one course. The First War, earth-shattering as it was for those who lived through it, is too little remembered today. When I researched _Chesterton on War and Peace, _ I made extensive use of the many rows of books written on it in a university library. I seemed to be the only one doing so. The old-fashioned return dates showed they'd not been checked out in a half-century or more. The 'war to end all wars' has become the forgotten war. Sad, very sad.

You are covering one of my favorite subjects ever. The world wars

Thank you for sharing these. I studied history at undergraduate and postgraduate level in England, but we didn't have an option to study military history. I always quite liked the idea of studing at an American university too. So this is a win win! Also, your channel is fantastic. Thanks for you hard work and efforts.

The algorithm might not like you talking about more than one subject, but I am absolutely here for it. Sounds like a phenomenal class.

Good for your professor going off on your class about nothing being inevitable. I always tell people who are frustrated with government to work local. We can make a difference, especially if we combine the tactical with the operational. It’s a lot of work that never ends, but it’s worth it.

Had I known that I could’ve had Professor Mercogliano as an instructor for even just a few courses, I would definitely have pursued higher education. I am so grateful I found this channel. Maybe I’ll be a recipient of an honorary degree from Campbell University if I watch enough of his videos.
