First of all, this was used in the Vietnam war. There were no Germans in Vietnam. The Vietnamese and not the Americans did this. Though during world war II, some allied and axis soldiers did this.

It would never trick an experienced hunter, tracker or a professional search party. Even when a person walks back forward its obvious in which direction they walk this could only trick someone who was raised in a city and never lived in the wild. I would probably get confused at first but would figure it out.

Just one problem. The gait of the walk would give it away as everyone walks with their feet pointed slightly out. If you did this trick, they'd point in. Anyone with common sense, let alone an experienced tracker would tell the difference.
