STRATEGY VS TACTICS | #DailyBurk | 080719

David Burkus on the difference between strategy and tactics. Don't assume strategy and tactics are the same time. Strategy is your chosen route to achieve the objective. Tactics are the actions you will take to employ that strategy. You need both to have a winning game plan.

STRATEGY VS TACTICS
Thanks for watching! Have you ever seen strategy confused with tactics?

I like that you include Objective as a third element. That helps to isolate the other two. Also broadening the abstractness of strategy to concepts like "deception" helps to see the precise targeted function of tactics. Another idea to think about is that tactics can consist of their own smaller objectives and strategies. But when comparing strategy and tactics, its important to identify which objective they are serving and what is the purpose of the conversation. If I interpret this video correctly, the goal to occupy a city can be an final objective utilizing its own strategies and tactics. It can also be a tactic in a strategy of being deceptive when occupying that city is not the real objective, but rather means to deceive from the real objective. It can also be a tactic in part of a broader flanking strategy that includes occupying other cities to create the encirclement. This video helped me see strategy in a broader theory perspective. And it helped me see that objectives and tactics can be relative based on the scope and context of the conversation. There are different strategies that use different tactics when your objective is to use a trojan horse. To the field soldier they don't ask why he's asked to build the horse. It was an order to build it. strategy could be to build it quick in the open, to build it slowly but hidden, to use existing resources, to have it transform out of some other structure. To the top generals, these details are irrelevant, so to them building the horse is only a tactic. They don't care how its built. The conversation is different at different scales of relevance, so the objectives scale out or in as well.

You mixed up Troy with Greece, it was the latter who wanted to capture Helen after she had been "kidnapped" by Paris of Troy... still a good example

That was a good explanation, it helps me to talk more fluidly and precisely about the program I'm building. In fact, I hadn't even thought about those words until I saw this video, and they make more sense to use.
