Friday Night Funkin' is an open-source rhythm game released on Newgrounds in 2020. The game is developed by a small group called The Funkin' Crew Inc., which consists of Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution, PaRappa the Rapper, and the "Dance Contest" minigame from Club Penguin, and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games.The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s. The game revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of opponents in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay involves hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song. The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam on October 5, 2020. An expanded demo was released on November 1, 2020, with updates continually released in the following months. A full version of the game backed by Kickstarter, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game, is in development. Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game in which the player controls a character called Boyfriend, who must defeat a series of opponents in order to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend. The player must pass multiple levels, referred to as "weeks" in-game, containing three songs each. Each week, the player faces a different opponent, though some deviate in structure from this via the inclusion of multiple opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a pattern of notes (represented as arrows) which the player must then mirror by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs introduce more complicated patterns, with the player's pattern sometimes varying from the opponent's or both singers engaging in a duet. For each week, the player has the option to select one of three difficulties: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty increases, the speed of incoming arrows increases, and the patterns of arrows become more complex. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and shown in the top corner of the week selection screen. The game contains two different modes of play: a story campaign in which songs are played linearly, and a "free play" mode which allows for free selection of any of the game's music tracks.

i like to imagine this and Sturm's subterfuge are both canon, just that Sturms is from tails' pov, where tails accidentally stumbles upon the fraud, where this one is from "Sonic"s pov, a friend in desperation to understand why everyone fears him, like from Tails' perspective the entire song is a violent chase, fear got to him and blurred the lines between truth and perception.

originally i had the idea that as SOON as someone says 2017x isnt sonic, he would lose it instantly, but now i like the idea of him putting more effort into trying to keep up the facade before snapping, i also LOVE him asking for help on what seems wrong about him, adds an AMAZING layer of character to him

This interpretation of 2017X is more fleshed out and... Human...

See, from what I've gathered, He is confused, and concerned about his sudden change in surroundings, about how his friends react, and from this line: "I sense a change in the wind, it brings an ich to my skin, " it really goes to show how displeased he is, and how he wants his questions answered... And from how he comunicates with Tails, he switches from calm and collected, to being a complete mess with his desperation for his BEST FRIEND'S advice, he shows genuine confusion and fear, pouring all his emotions onto Tails, since it seems like he wasn't able to communicate with his other friends... He also starts to think that there's something wrong with himself, since people have always trusted Sonic. It shows how at unease he is. I also like how he also has that trait of Sonic being impatient, but also saying sorry for his impatience afterwards. He only becomes deeply enraged when the pace picks up, coming to the conclusion that, after Tails claims that 2017X isn't Sonic, Tails is the fake, since, in his mind, the real Tails would understand him. I love it, and I hope we see more of this interpretation of 2017X

1:54 I honestly really like the direct parallel in this art when comparing 2011x to 2017x, except they're chasing for two completely different reasons. One is just looking for answers from his good old best friend, and the other simply wants to with him. Really well done on the lyrics, by the way, cause that was just fantastic! Quite the different take on the lyrics while still aligning with the story pretty well!

Oh my god I love this characterization of him. Making him really act like Sonic and trying to reason, but coming off as hostile is so intriguing. It's such a fresh spin on the guy that Im surprised I haven't seen yet. Good job!

Memes aside, i don't think people focus on 2017x's impostor syndrome enough in this way despite it being a core part of his character. I really really really dig how weirdly emotional he is before he eventually blows up, that's so good <3
