In many parts of the world most Covid restrictions are gone, but in China zero Covid remains the strategy.

Health officials in the country believe if they give up now, their efforts would have amounted to nothing, but attempts to become zero Covid keep cities such as Shanghai in lockdown.

The BBC's Ros Atkins takes an in-depth look into why China is doubling down on it's zero Covid policy.

And if there's something China is known for all over the world, it's their complete transparency and honesty in reporting the effects on it's population from pandemics and natural disasters, the numbers the CCP make public are always 100% trustworthy...

1:15 The BBC should not quote Chinese statistics without huge disclaimers. This is not responsible journalism.

Funny how government officials have that "We know what we're doing and you don't." attitude all over the world.

I like how he compared Chinese and US statistics with a straight face.

China can't seriously believe that anyone takes that 5k death figure seriously

IF the world doesn’t wake up to the dependency it has created, then it deserves whatever happens.

I would be skeptical of their COVID death numbers.

It's not about "zero covid", it's about "zero resistance" to tyrannical control and subjugation.

It's called complete government control.

Abandoning Covid zero now wouldn’t make past actions for nothing. We have better treatments and vaccines for the virus since the first lockdowns.

As someone who's here right now in Shanghai and been "locked down" (up) for over a month, the whole think is a joke, and political nonsense that's it. Shanghai is being reminded it is not the capital of the country, and that's it.

well... its perfectly simple.. either chinese haven't a single clue what they're doing or they know something about covid we don't.... or they are really doing this for other reasons to do with economics/geopolitics...

The slogans held by the protesters read: Protest against the construction of a pollutant transfer station next to their own homes. It is recommended that the BBC find someone who can speak Chinese to review the content first.

It's called a "special COVID operation".

2019 | chinese gov: there is no pandemic here
2022 | chinese gov: we lockdown the cities SOLELY becoz of covid, not *other new viruses* .
WHO: ok

I'm guessing these BBC "critics" haven't seen the bodies that died from COVID.

When you see them disinfecting streets, you know they have no clue

I'm not sure what's in the disinfectant that they're spraying in the streets, but, in general, that sounds like a terrible idea. Many microorganisms are essential to not only us, but the environment as a whole.

I’m guessing a lot of foreigners who thought Shanghai/China is the greatest country to be in, will leave China in a hurry - if not already.

The BBC seem to think you need a TV licence in the UK to watch their videos on YT. Think the simple answer would to not upload them to a FREE PUBLIC platform.
