You’re paid based on your leverage, and that is about it. Your leverage is determined by a number of factors, and most of them aren’t related to your ability to generate value for your company. The value you generate for your company relative to what they pay you is tangentially relevant, at best. This is why the range of value generated-to-compensation ratios varies as widely as it does across jobs in the US. There are rank-and-file lowly employees who are the linchpins of their companies and disgustingly overpaid senior executives who are less valuable than useless working in the same companies, respectively. Let’s not act like career success or corporate ladder climbing is any kind of meritocracy.
