The first people who actually broke the enigma code were Polish mathematicians Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski and Jerzy Różycki. But after the invasion of Poland the Nazis increased security measures on the Enigma code which made it harder to breake.

Fun fact: the UK did not tell their Allie’s that they had cracked the code, so the other Allies tried to crack it themselves with the exception of the US.
The US stole a German U-boat and just took the cyphers and the enigma machine.
