Reducing and/or eliminating body-focused repetitive behaviors is a primary goal for many people affected by these disorders. And reaching those recovery goals is a great accomplishment. Because BFRBs are chronic, maintaining recovery is part of the process, and often involves more than one might think.

In this one-hour TLC webinar, Dr. Fred Penzel, an expert on BFRB treatment and member of TLC's Scientific Advisory Board, outlines some of the challenges one might face while on the road to recovery from these disorders.

Dr. Penzel clarifies the meaning of having a chronic disorder as well as the concepts of recovery vs. cure and lapse vs. relapse in BFRB treatment. He'll discuss potential threats to recovery and strategies for protecting and maintaining various states of recovery. This webinar will offer useful tips and new perspectives to help you achieve and maintain recovery goals.

Fred Penzel, PhD, Executive Director, Western Suffolk Psychological Services in Huntington, New York, has been involved in the treatment of TTM and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) for over 32 years. He sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of both TLC and the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, and is a founding member of both. Dr. Penzel is a prolific writer on the subjects of TTM and OCD, and is the author of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Guide to Getting Well and Staying Well and The Hair Pulling Problem: A Complete Guide to Trichotillomania.

Another GREAT presentation by Dr. Penzel. Semantically, I find it helpful to differentiate between a "slip" and a "relapse" or "lapse." What I mean is a slip is you do a little bit of pulling or picking, while the latter is you really get into the "zone" and do more substantial picking or pulling. I really like the concept of USA - Unconditional Self-Acceptance and plan to borrow it. THANKS Fred!
