What Happens After You Die? NT Wright on 100 Huntley Street (HD)

(HD) Transcript: "According to the new testament, the time line says that you die, and if you belong to Jesus Christ, then you will be with him, which is the best thing you could possibly imagine. Its a time of rest. A time of refreshment. And delight. I dont think it will be an unconscious time. But its hard to describe, who we will be at that point. We can use the word, soul, if you like. But the bible doesnt use the word soul, that often. So its not necessarily a great help to know if that the best way of talking about it. But then after that time, and its hard to say whether we will experience it for a long time or not, but there are some things that we might. Then God will do something quite new, with the whole creation. And all those who have been, in that resting mode if you like, will be raised from the dead, and will be the new inhabitants of this new heaven and earth together, which God will make. Which will be both very like what we presently know, and quite unlike, because there will be no death, no corruption, no decay. Its hard for us because our minds are conditioned by a lot of Western philosophical thought. Its hard for us to imagine an non corruptible physicality. A body that wont be corruptible and decay. But that is what were promised. And its actually very exciting even though its hard to imagine."

Great video! What is the Scriptural basis for believers going home to the Lord at their death awaiting the resurrection? Are there any other texts other than 2 Cor 5:8, Phil 1:23, Lazarus and the theif on the cross in Luke?

Paul said that this world was the body's comfort zone, but that the believer was living as if in a foreign land, because they were not together with the lord.

2Co 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

Paul looked forward to being present with the lord at the return of Jesus to Earth:

1Th 4:17 Then...meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

So what returns to God is the breath:

Ec 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit [breath] shall return unto God who gave it.

When this occurs, the "person" is dead:

Jas 2:26 For as the body without the spirit [breath] is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

The person is then unconscious, as in sleep:

Da 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

"with the lord" means, in that passage, refers to being martyred like him (SUN+dative). Paul teaches that dead believers are asleep in their graves, awaiting resurrection. Then, they will accompany him into conquering the middle east, where Jesus will reign 1000 years. Then, Jesus steps down and God himself takes over and rules in the middle east forever.

The Bible says "all have sinned". Our natural state is eternal perfection without sin, but since "The Fall" (Adam & Eve) we have all inherited the tendency to die and go to hell. I do believe that there are only two choices, faith in Jesus who took the punishment that we deserve, or eternal punishment with no reprieve. As an Evangelical, even I try not to think of it, though knowing the REAL good news gives great comfort but is still a challenge. I will pray for you. Read the four gospels!

after that 'TIME'?
Nigel I agree with you on everything else, but what have the constaints of time to do with what we experience after bodily death?
please read this* - from where it says 'The problem disappears' [although preferably all]
this biblical scholar [now experiencing what we speak of] has elaborated on/confirmed what I picked up from the Spirit alone, I guess [as I had not read it from anyone else], although Anne Graham, wrote something close to it

Ecclesiastes 9:10
10Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Acts 2:29
29Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Even David is dead. Acts 2:34
34For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

Multiple scriptures, even Jesus' teachings, say that believers souls "sleep" when they physically die, until God resurrects their bodies. In other videos, NT Wright teaches that idea.

In the Genesis construction of a human, there are two materials:
* dirt, that was shaped to look like God (thus showing us that God has human form, or rather vice versa),
* God's breath ("breath" is consistently mistranslated as "spirit" in modern "Bibles."
When the breath entered Adm's nostrils, he became a living "person" ("person" is consistently mistranslated as "soul" in modern "Bibles".
... continued...

i think you are closer then most people who proclaim Christ, the condemnation on utube is just so unbearable to listen to, Lots of so called perfect type christains sending the 99% to hell to burn it just to awful to hear and contemplare, Their are multipal resurrections in bible if you look closely, 3, major ones total of 5 i believe.we all need to love each other condemantion is of an evil origin, Do you beat someone who is sick, or do you love them and fill them with hope,

Ps 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

Ec 3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
