The creation of Sancho Panza is one thing that truly raised the scope of the novel. The dialog between the two often finds Cervantes' voice, or perhaps the reader's voice, nether in the words of Don Quixote nor in those of Sancho Panza, but rather somewhere in between.

We also find a fusion of the popular styles of his era: The books of chivalry, of course, pastoral literature, the byzantine novel, the sentimental story, and the picaresque.

Tim Nance Your two sided approach to literature this Season is compelling and effective. Are you suggesting in this piece that Cervantes created the role of the Hero's companion? Thinking back I do not recall an instance of this in literature before Cervantes time. p.s. I hope the curates don't burn Spiderman!

I found the chapter with the book burning super rude and I firmly believe that the way the “sane” characters handled Don Quixote’s madness made him worse and lead to further confrontation. Also fiction should be able to contain anything, because its all fake. Its no fault of the books being fictional or weirdly written that Don Quixote went crazy.
