That is aluminum powder that mixes into the ammonium nitrate. You really ought to wear some gloves when you mix those. Or at a minimum wash your hands well after mixing. Aluminum does bad things to your body and that aluminum has been made very very tiny and can cause you all kinds of issues later should you get a lot of exposure to it. Pay attention to the wind out side when you mix as well, don’t let a cloud of aluminum dust hit you in the face. I add a couple of other chemicals to those sonic boom targets to make them what you would call rim fire sensitive I guess. I don’t use a rim fire though, an air rifle 😂😂😂 a big one, a 50 caliber. Those targets are fun, just don’t poison yourself mixing them.

Would recommend iron oxide and aluminum powder for a thermite reaction, or potassium permanganate and aluminum powder for more classic boom.
