How Do Antiviral Drugs Work?

Antiviral drugs could help us fight the new coronavirus, but we don’t currently have a highly potent and effective antiviral that cures COVID-19. Why not? We called a few virologists to find out.

I just barely stumbled across this channel..
And so far I'm loving the lack of politics I've seen, or rather, _not seen.._
If this lack of politics is consistent, then I think I've found the next channel I'm going to binge on.

"Why Don't We Have a Cure Yet?" because the thing's only been around for a few months and a cure takes time to develop and test?

BTW, these are drugs we need to keep funding. They are going to save so many lives.

This is all great and super useful information.

But could you please inform Dr. Racaniello he's got his microphone set up incorrectly? That style of mic has a cardiod pickup pattern (named since it's somewhat heart shaped) which picks up all the sound from the front, but rejects most of the sound coming from the back. In this case the main lobe comes out the side of the microphone, usually in the direction of the manufacturer label.

Covid-19 is a wake up call for pharmaceutical development. This time it's 0.5-2% morbidity. Next time we might not be so lucky. If we get something with a 15%, 20%, 25% morbidity rate, I'm not going to be satisfied until every corner is cut. Proper testing durations and methods be damned, make something that might work, and produce it for everyone.

Is this guy wittier than the normal reactions presentations or what?

Nice, funny presentation.
There are some mushrooms that have a lot of antiviral compounds, and at the same time they are also immune system boosters. And those mushrooms can be eaten or taken as tea.
Even if they are not the cure, maybe those mushrooms could be a great help to make people less susceptible to this new virus, as they are known to help against colds and flu?

I initially was just listening, not watching, but then I recognized Vincent Racaniello’s voice from the various TwiX podcasts that I’m subscribed to. I think this is the first time I’ve seen what he looks like. Anyways, great episode!

Why not make the drug and aerosol so it can go in to the cells of the lungs and inhibit the rna polymerase of the virus. The can garentee the intake of the drug and target specifically cells of the lungs primarily and get into the blood stream and distribute the drug via absorption of the lungs.

Because you can't "Cure" viruses only preventative actions work?

Wasn't a bill passed to streamline the process to testing? By the Trump administration?
