Seoul's foreign ministry proposed a budget plan for next year.
A significant increase in the amount used for official development assistance that can help developing countries fight the coronavirus.
Yoon Jung-min fills us in.
South Korea's foreign affairs ministry has proposed a total budget for next year... of some 2-point-6 billion U.S. dollars, planning to contribute more to the international community.
That's an increase of 5-point-7 percent on-year.
In particular, the amount for official development assistance has jumped by more than 17 percent to around 964 million dollars, as the country plans to contribute more in terms of global COVID-19 vaccines and humanitarian projects.
South Korea had earlier pledged to contribute 100 million dollars to the COVAX AMC, and plans to continue working with global vaccine partnerships.
The ministry also plans to spend more on eradicating disease in developing countries.
This is part of efforts to raise the country's global status, with Korea now categorized as a developed country by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Next year's budget also focuses on Korea expanding its activities in global diplomacy.
Some two million dollars will be used to reinforce cooperation with the G7, the G20 and APEC.
Part of that will be spent on South Korea's plan to make a bid for a non-permanent member seat at the UN Security Council for the 2024-to-2025 term.
The ministry also plans to contribute more in terms of climate and energy.

Next year, South Korea celebrates a series of milestone anniversaries of establishing diplomatic ties with key partners, including 140 years of diplomatic relations with the U.S. and 30 years of ties with the People's Republic of China.
For those events, the ministry has increased budget to over 6 million dollars.
The foreign ministry has also upped spending to protect Korean nationals overseas when in danger... and to renovate its offices using new technologies.
