Hearing an actual doctor call it a “long white doctor coat” is the highlight of my day

Imagine being able to login to anything on your first day at a clinic. 😄 If anyone knows who you are and gives you half the tour, it's a win. In my experience at least.

Back when I was a baby nurse, I asked a female octogenarian when her last menstrual period was. 😳😂
(I was doing an admission and was going down a checklist not really paying attention.)🤦🏻‍♀️
The lady replied “Oh dear, that’s been decades ago.”😂😂😂

Newly minted scientist, fresh out of honours year, in an actual paying position. Look at me as I science! Then the regulator on the compressed air cylinder running the dialysis system in the cold room exploded. I was a graduate; I could no longer run screaming to a lab demonstrator or supervisor to fix it. So, like a graduate, I ran screaming to the tech to fix it. "Wait right here!" he said, dashing off. I was so relieved. He returned with a tool box and a large shifter. "Here you are, " he smiled, "Now you can fix it." Once I stopped panicking, I did get the system running again. It was a most educational experience.

I am a dredge operator. Now lol. My first day as deck hand was cleaning engine room. On second level was wiping something down. My butt must have moved some life jackets a little that were right behind me. Pushed them into the exhaust manifold. Lit engine room on fire 🔥 first day. Can't believe they didn't fire me. Now I'm the operator

If you didn't even think about crying on your first day as a doctor, did you even doctor?

On my first day at the liquor store I worked at, I was sweeping, and I ended up knocking over a wire rack full of wine. 😑 Fortunately, my boss Megan was super cool. She saw that I was about to cry, and said "Dude if this is the worst thing you do here, I'll make you a manager." 😂 One year later, I became store manager. Then, I finished my degree, and moved on to a big girl job. I still hang out with my old boss.

You know what they say - the inkier the coat on the first day, the better the doctor he will be.

My first day as a speech therapist during my CFY.
- Found out my supervisor works in a different building 30 min away and isn't coming by until Friday and this is Monday.
- There are 5 patients and 3 notes due
-No one knows where the previous therapists notes on these people are ( they were writing them by hand???)
-No one knew where the previous therapist kept her materials. Just gestured to a room they have lunch in with a bunch of cabinets and said "in here".
-I got verbal directions on how to navigate the 3 floors and 5 different wings and a poor map of only 2 wings.

At my first day of work they just sat me down at the desk and assumed I knew everything... i was 16 and knew nothing. I was the best mediocre receptionist that department has ever seen 😃 my favorite days were the ones I was sent to the back room to file.

I honestly think it's super wholesome that he wears his first ever jacket in his TikToks

Happened to a friend, was his first day, rounding with his attending, said the patient was stable and ready for discharge, not a half hour later, everybody was rushing to that patient's room for a code blue.
Throughout our residency, he probably ran the most codes out of our class, he was known as the code guy.

First day as intern, very first patient, bleeding out (exsanguinating for my doc friends) and my attending was on vacation in Hawaii!! And it was a Saturday morning. Let me rewind a little, the way it works in the US, is that all newly minted residents, so fresh out of medical school, start their “rotations”, or where they’ll be working for the next month, or longer, on July 1st. And for me, that happened to be a Saturday. The night before, I had spoken to my new atttending on the phone & he told me about all of the patients on his service. His service consisted of just him & a partner; so, there were only a handful of patients in the hospital. This was a General Surgery residency btw. The next morning when I start rounding at about 6:30am, all by myself, the first patient says as I greet him “I think I peed myself doc” because he felt warm between his legs. Turned out the warm was several units of his blood. Literally the next thing he said was “why are you turning out the lights doc?” The lights were all still on because I had flipped them on when I initially went to confirm that it was a lot of blood I was seeing on his lap & in the bed. Luckily, I had an experienced nurse come in & save my butt (& patient), because I honestly had no idea what to do. They teach you how to handle this sort of thing in med school, but if you think that you can smoothly manage something like that on your very first day of being a “real doctor”, then hats off to you. Anyway, she helped me, basically told me what to do to stabilize the patient, along with help from the rest of the nursing team on the floor that morning, until the attending’s partner arrived at the hospital & we took the patient to the OR to stop the bleeding. Which we did. That’s my crazy first day at work story.

In the Netherlands we are not allowed to take our white coats home, they are cleaned in and by the hospital. We also have short sleeves, so we aren't able to smear ink all over it ^^

I was afraid your dirty coat story was going to include the explanation "...but then I remembered that one patient I saw with diarrhea..."

My first day of work ever was at a retail store. I worked the morning shift. One of the overnight workers took a massive dump in front of the breakroom fridge (yes we had bathrooms, they are located about fifteen feet from the breakroom, no there was nothing wrong with them) and then we got robbed.

It was July...I was in section two, of a Level I Trauma center the start of a night shift and it's an insane night. The waiting room is full, the hall is stacked, we have 4 beds, I'm working teamed with a new Intern, asked him "how long have you been a Doctor?" and...he looked at his watch! He had graduated the night it went really well, I marked the orders, and he had till he talked to the attending to figure out why... the attending caught us around 0300 when he couldn't explain why a hot abdomen had amylase got ordered...(surgeons want the hot abdomen to have amylase in labs to check pancreas) and he told Intern learn good lesson first day, listen to your nurses lol
