I'm gonna over analyse this like everything.

It shows he really does care about them, despite just meeting then. I think he at first appeared angry to see them in the woods, because he didn't want them to turn out like his daughter. (as we saw in the comics, she went out to get firewood despite The Woodsman's warnings and got lost) But, he still cares.

What's crazy is that my ex showed me this show and honestly I thank them. After when Greg has his dream and tells Wirt he's leaving made me cry even though it's Wirt who has the development throughout. 10/10 especially for a mini series that made me cry with Gregory's innocence
