Quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei

Most galaxies have at their cores a supermassive black hole hundreds of millions of times the mass of our Sun.  They emit powerful ultraviolet radiation from the  supermassive black hole at the core of the host galaxy.

The most active of these galaxy cores are called quasars, where infalling material is heated to a point where a brilliant searchlight shines into deep space. The beam is produced by a disk of glowing, superheated gas encircling the black hole.

Please join +Tony Darnell Dr.+Carol Christian and +Scott Lewis as they discuss some fascinating new observations of quasars made by the Hubble Space Telescope

What a splendid discussion! Thank you all so much.
And I'm looking forward immensely to the graphic of the new SI unit of The Standard Cow!

Impressed by just how current these hangouts are. We see a press release about something interesting and within a few days it's featured in the hangout. Great job guys.

Are you saying "Vorweerp" or something like that?

'Voorwerp' is actually Flemish/Belgian and is a translation from the Latin 'objectere', hence both meaning the same: the noun of [being] 'thrown in front'. 'Werpen' in Flemish and 'jectere' in Latin mean 'throwing'; voor and ob mean: in front of, as in an object in front of a subject. Both 'voorwerp' and 'object' are Flemish; in French it is 'objet'. So here you see the actual meaning of the Latin based English word 'object' :)

I heard there are some (larger) galaxies without a super massive black hole in the nuclei. Is this really a possibilty?
