Continuing our descent, we reach the transition zone between the mantle and the outer core. The outer core, composed mainly of liquid iron and nickel, lies between 2,900 and 5,150 kilometers below the surface. It is in this region that the convection currents that generate the Earth's magnetic field occur, protecting our planet from solar radiation. Further down, we reach the inner core, a solid sphere around 1,200 kilometers in diameter, also made of iron and nickel.
