Having a religion like Islam requires discipline once you hit puberty. So as a fighter you can commit to the sport and discipline yourself much easier than others.

Religion has been an important part of fighting since ancient times. Battles in ancient and mediaeval period used to be brutal. Guns and explosives kill you swiftly. But hammers, swords and axes put you through ocean of pain. So people used to believe that there was a higher power backing them up and the pain and loss suffered in the battle would be rewarded in the afterlife.

As a muslim who isn’t really religious, this is mostly true from what I’ve seen from others who are. But you see these dagestanis prosper because amateur sambo and fighting is embedded in their culture and is therefore automatically connected with religion. This is not the case here in the middle east. The sport is slightly starting to grow though.
