Fiberglass Repair Kit - is it worth it? A look at the Evercoat Marine Kit

Is this fiberglass repair kit worth it? If you need to do a small fiberglass repair to your boat, should you buy this kit or buy separate items? I look at whether the Evercoat Marine Fiberglass Repair Kit is worth purchasing and what elements and materials you would need to buy that aren't included in the kit. I am always skeptical of these kits, because I always wonder if they include everything you need to do fiberglass repair work.

Evercoat and West Marine sell marine fiberglass boat repair kits - I take a look to see if a fibreglass repair kit is a good option for a small repair on your boat. Does the kit include everything you need to do the job? Is there a cheaper option?

The West Maine kit may(not sure it was quick shot) include a Epoxy based repair for SMC hulls instead of regular polyester fiberglass repair. The Epoxy kits are more expensive and I know for a fact West marine has a Epoxy system

Marine grade gelcoat will be made with various composites to reach an ideal stiffness/flexibility, and they are formulated to resist water absorption an salt water corrosion. There are may times of gelcoats/resin composite mixtures, some have different fillers, which vary in their ability to mix with color pigments. Harder resins composites will not mix as well with pigments but are more desirable for surfaces that need to be scratch and impact resistant.

Even though all are generally similar they have slight different properties that may reveal themselves over the course of decades, so its difficult to see the differences on a short time scales. Source, I work for a fiberglass product manufacturer. We make Tables, umbrellas, tractor canopies and even 1940's gas pump replicas.

If it’s a boat you can plan on it getting wet and water standing in it and floating in for extended periods. Like marine plywood is necessary for boat building. Marine Resin is also made to hold up better and not delaminate as easily. Not an expert but bet if you research you will find this is true. My friend in the business said “I only use West Systems Fiberglass resin “ Don’t use Polyester Resin. I’m sure he has his reasons since he’s seen many boat repairs.

I can't speak for the value of the repair kit. But perhaps for the value of product in terms of quality, I did recently purchase a quart of the same Evercoat Marine resin. I used this with some fiberglass mat and cloth I already had lying around from previous projects. I've also relatively recently used Bondo's Fiberglass resin; which locally, was almost $10 more expensive than Evercoat. Both came with 11cc of hardener.

In my case, I think Bondo brand was the better overall value. Despite the extra cost, Bondo proved to be less sensitive to precise hardener-to-resin ratio than Evercoat. That allowed me to do the job once and correctly. With Evercoat, however, there were at least a couple of times when the resin gelled/hardened within 5 minutes. That created waste, as well as sandpaper and elbow grease to remove the malformed repair (also factor into that, time waiting for that to cure just so that it can be sanded out). I suppose there just is no standard for "drop" as a unit of measure, so it's very difficult for me to know whether it was not my fault--I suppose both sides of that argument have merit.

You didn't even test it. What a huge waste of time.

Wayne, it bothers me that you call yourself “the boat guy” yet you don’t know that a marine resin is softer and more pliable then an ordinary resin used for say automobiles. Reason being a boat expands and contracts and a harder resin would crack. You seem quite critical about the product that you’re reviewing but you yourself are putting out an inferior product. You walk away from this video telling your audience that it’s better for them to save $10 and buy a product that’s going to fail on them instead of maybe doing their research because you just weren’t quite sure.Maybe do better next time.
