My bf and I just finished a trip to Puerto Escondido and Barra de la Cruz. Overall as intermediate surfers we found the localism and waves not worth it in Puerto, unless you’re advanced and willing to surf Zicatela. When it was small, the more chill spots sucked (like La Punta and Carazillilo) cause it was filled with learners getting lessons and all the teachers demanded you to get out of the best spots for them. So you spend ages sitting out there trying to be respectful but not catch much. My bf got told to “go home” many sessions, and even one time he talked back and the guy came up and smacked his board multiple times trying to scare him. We spent 2 months there and would’ve much rather spent that time in Barra. We were expecting way worse localism but it was actually amazing compared. We must’ve got Barra when it wasn’t too big, so the locals weren’t really out or competitive. But it was still head high with overhead sets and so fun. And as a woman, all the guys were super respectful. I was shocked. There was actual surfers etiquette in the water and we all took turns which was a “crazy” concept after surfing in Puerto Escondido. Plus on Sundays in Barra, from 10-12 only women and kids can surf. That was one of the best sessions ever for me to experience. Like Snapper Rocks quality without the people or competition. I cant wait to return to Barra as it was amazing. Thought I’d share that extra info for anyone interested in going, love the vids 🙌

November-march is winter, which is the coolest time a year by far. April-Oct is definitely the hot part of the year. Other that sounds about right😎🤙🏼

Good to see you spending a bit of time at home, I was getting a bit jealous, full time surf travel.

April to October is actually the hottest time of the year here - by a lot - but ya, everything else sounds pretty accurate and most definitely south swell season anywhere south of Manzanillo. Occasional big south swell and especially SSW (more west the better) will light up as far north as Vallarta area all the way to Baja, but in general anyone who wants to try summer Mex should should go South. Cheers.

Yea Dan I was in Mexico 2014 in a American catered for holiday destination and things got pretty expensive. Had to travel to get out and support the local eateries in the next town where it was a bit cheaper.

When I traveled to a point break as a surf destination, I would train pretty hard to sustain fitness. Lots of padding and not necessarily surfing about a month out from the trip.

Was swimming at Acapulco beach at 11pm last night in transit to south Mexico! Nothing happened but definitely a sketchy neck of the woods haha

I had a great time reading your book bro. One question: does it make sense going to Salinas if you are not in a hotel that includes the surf guides package?

How do you afford your surf trips? What do you do for a living? Thanks!

Thanks for the insight to Salina. Always wanted to go there but this sounds not cool.

Cartels forcing you to bribe them to surf, the culture in Mexico sure does sound as you say "wicked".
