A pocket sized option for shavings, a pencil sharpener works great for thin shavings. Either use sticks or splits small enough to fit.

The chogan T hawk is the axe I'll find.
You had in a previous video a short shoutout to Dave Canterbury.
So you got my vote! 😄

I'm like a kid that's always blown away by these small tricks
I simply love basic, simple things that are just working no matter what. It's like you are connected with the people that lived 10000 years ago

For about 15-20 bucks you can buy a pocket planer or end grain planer- it's just exactly what it sounds like, a tiny planer. Making shavings so thin you can see through them is a cinch even for a novice- and you can have a pile of shavings too large to use in less than 1 minute. You want the kind with the adjustable blade, so you can adjust the thickness of the shavings you're removing. Not only does it allow you to make a pile of shavings in just seconds- it's really, really useful for carving projects. Mine measures 3.5 " x 1.25" and is about an inch thick at the thickest point. It weighs next to nothing and is easy to carry.

Great tip to keep the blade stationary and slice/shave the wood. Safer and more effective.

That's a great way to teach kids to make feathers. Great tip, Dan.

Absolutely love it, simple and effective. Makes we want to go out into the yard with the axe and make shavings all day long.

I've used this method with my fixed blade ( k bar ) to make tent stakes and wooden nails. When your hands don't work as good as they used to, this helps greatly. The shavings were just a bonus. Great video.

As being a fan of carrying an ax as well this is a great tip that I wish I had thought of... I can see this as a way to not rely on a knife for shavings, thus reducing wear on the knife. Not that I don't keep a diamond hone in my pack. The less effort I need to expand energy on the better!
