student: which bar should i start to play?
Schiff: nah nevermind Czerny sucks

Keep in mind this advice is for advanced piano technique. If you are a beginner you should use curved fingers and play like Czerny - evenness of notes is more important than style for beginners.

When the student plays it you think that it sounds fine, but the difference with flatter fingerposition is amazing. Sounds so much more flowing, musical and expressive.

I like the idea that a top planist dislikes Czerny

I'm 69 and started piano lessons finally after Covid-19 about 6 months ago!
It takes a ton of time and effort to make good music!

My father used to say "you need something for your heart. Not your fingernails. Forget czerny - and also most of Mozart." 😂❤😢 miss him

The amount of force he put on the keys he might be playing the same thing over and over but its the intensity of the note thats why he said flatten his finger instead of curving his fingers so that he would be able to play the note lighter and more elegantly. Very good teacher.

Andres He plays the most favorite interpretation of Bach's Italian concerto.

Mr Schiff has very exacting and disczerning taste

Andras is SO good at Bach and Schubert... everything he says is gold. Unlike, um, how to say it, a certain other pianist on these masterclasses...

I understand his sense of humour and its pedagogical intent. But I also have a lot of respect for second-tier composers like Czerny, because most of us, including probably Mr Schiff, wouldn't be able to write anything better than that if we tried. It is very hard to write competent music. Czerny was a more-than-decent composer, certainly the greatest educational composer in history; he also has couple of interesting concert compositions among the hundreds he wrote. Trying to understand and enhance their interest through interpretation is a great training ground for playing truly first-tier compositions.

I LOVE Czerny. Carl Czerny was a excellent composer and pianist. Beethoven didn't train fools.

He says all this and completely butchers the Schumann concerto...

Cerny fue maestro de Liszt, hacia buena musica pero muy rapida y articulada por lo que no se parece en nada al estilo relajado de Schubert.

Brighter sound vs dreamy sound aside, when Schiff started playing. It sounded Czerny to me. My points is there are more than one way to express.
