My wife and I are in our first marriage have celebrated over forty years together. Relationships/marriages are a bond between two people. They flourish or wither based on the actions or inactions of the people involved. It only takes one person to kill a relationship, but it takes two working at it for it to thrive. We buy into the fairy tale ending "....and they lived happily ever after." because you've won the big prize, and now that you did, you don't have to do more, and can coast the rest of your life. As a teen, I recognized that the fairy tale ending was a lie. If you want your relationship/marriage to work till you die, then both partners need to work at it till the day you die.

On my husband’s side and my side, the older generations were all still married but living in toxic relationships with hateful, controlling, verbally and emotionally abusive spouses but never divorced because they couldn’t financially. Now there are more resources and awareness for victims to get out of abusive marriages and experience freedom. Just because divorce is more common doesn’t mean marriages were healthier before.

It's so sad to hear those numbers, but I i find it hard to believe them completely. That rate is 18% higher than the rate of marriages each year.

I can't tell if Americans are just really bad at picking their partners or if they are really just bad at talking things out and respecting each other and themselves. This stat is heartbreaking.
