Do you often get scared after reading a super long math word problem?

Solving word problems doesn’t have to be painful.

In this Practicle math video, let’s look at one of the P5 math fraction word problems and learn an easy way to solve it.

Here’s the fraction problem that we’re going to solve:

“Alicia and Clara had a total of 764 beads, They used some of their beads to make a necklace each and kept the remaining beads. Alicia had 1/3 as many beads remaining as Clara after making their necklaces. The number of beads Clara used to make her necklace was 63 more than what she had left. Clara used 3 times as many beads as Alicia to make her necklace. How many beads did Alicia have at first?”

The problem solving technique that we’re going to use is the Singapore math bar model drawing method. You’ll be able to see how drawing the bar model for this math problem can help you see the word problem better and solve them quickly. This Singapore math method can be applied to other fractions word problems as well. Once you’ve learnt how to solve fraction word problems with it, you can apply it to any other math questions that you see.

You could also draw a number bond diagram and slice the parts to map the remainder. Same equations result.
