Mai is a terrible character

I like that Mai wasn't head over heels for Zuko as she was strong enough to scold and dump Zuko.

She served her purpose as an opposite personality type to Ty Lee fairly well

Also, Mai was never just "Zuko's girlfriend, " she was very much herself, and when he did something wrong, she would let him know and get upset. Also, Zuko and she had a very teenage relationship, where they both liked each other a lot, and it's realistic that he would be that way with her. Didn't it have the best example of what a relationship was, you know? The end of the series was quite sweet, where they both meet before his coronation as Fire Lord, and it's nice to know that they supported each other, even though they broke up in the comics. That support and affection still exists and is still present. Zuko trusts her a lot, and she trusts him.

I loved Mai. I feel like not every character has to have a ginormous massive personality with the craziest grandest back story ever. I feel like in a show that has so many big and unique personalities it’s what really makes her stand out among all of them. I think her character design as well is very interesting & her weapons & fight scenes were always different from all of the other characters. I feel like a big problem is that people forget that in the real world there are people like Mai. That aren’t in your face 24/7 craving attention & aren’t super defined and passionate about something or everything. They are just there living there lives and just keeping to themselves you know. Mai isn’t June at all. They are two different characters and people and shouldn’t be compared to one another. You can like one more than the other but her being more liked by you doesn’t mean that she’s a better character. It just means you like her for what you see & that shouldn’t correlate to Mai. Her being different or the way you’d describe her boring or just not interesting is the very point of her as a character and her as a person. It’s exactly what makes her unique and her in the show. She doesn’t need to have anything changed about her to suffice you or anyone else she’s her own person. Just like if she was real. The world & people don’t cater to how you feel they should be or act. They just are.

Someone wasn’t paying attention during the beach episode. Mai has a fear of expression due to controlling parents. That doesn’t make her a bland character, it just makes her have less presence than the big, loud personalities like Zuko and Azula. It frustrates how much crap Mai gets as a character just because people think she’s not overly emotive like the rest of them. What really frustrates me is that showing her happy with Zuko is what this guy claims “ruins her character” like, no dude, it adds depth. Like, she’s capable of having feelings, and Zuko returning is helping her back out of the shell she’d regressed into and push past her fear of Azula.

My thoughts in Mai is that she's isn't that one dimensional at all. The Beach episode revealed more about why she acted the way she did. Why she acted gloomy and never spoke much. Because everytime she would express herself she'd get in trouble with her parents. In other words much like Zuko she had to be someone that wasn't herself in order to be approved by others. Which is most likely why she gravitated towards Zuko seeing herself in him.

I like Mai I don’t get why people don’t like her she’s a great character i like her personality and she’s badass and her romance with Zuko was sweet and you could see much she cared for Zuko and I didn’t like feel she was Zuko side piece at all and she wasn’t afraid to call out his terrible behaviour and she didn’t lose her personality she was still the gloomy emo girl even with Zuko and I feel like people just hate her because she gets in the way of their ship

If you really want to know more about Mai, read the comics. She is not a girl "without personality" as they want to make her seem, she has enough personality to be herself that way, she just doesn't express her emotions much due to her upbringing. However, she is truly passionate. She loves Ty Lee's hugs very much, for example. She cares about people and is currently a teacher at the Fire Nation Girls Academy, where she took her job as a teacher very seriously, teaching the girls better things than what they were taught before and advocating for the new world they plan to build in the Fire Nation.

Jin in one episode showed more chemistry with Zuko than Mai

I think the lack of personality is actually what makes her an interesting character, she is more realistic than the other characters and in a way a realist she dumps Zuko when he wasn’t treating her fairly and even stood up to someone who made her need to pack a change of undies 24/7 for someone she cared about, her character wasn’t just Zuko’s side piece she was loyal to a fault to the fire nation but also bored with it’s people so was willing to help Azula because she was bored, she’s skilled and also the best friend of the fire nation princess and that says a lot. She shows empathy towards Zuko but also is abrasive. There is chemistry with Zuko but most people are just mad zutara wasn't canon, Zuko and Mei were both mad at the world and shot down by their parents and Mei liked his sensitiveness but when he lost sight of that she left him. what I'm saying is she isn't showy about her character but its a sprinkled trail and she stands out by not being a big personalit. also she is a germaphobe implied by the drill episode in season 2

Mai’s personality was never destroyed, she’s sighs a lot without zuko and opens up with zuko. That’s why she was so mad when he broke up with her. And she does have a lot of potential but she’s supporting character so we’ll never see her fully

So a person who has feelings towards another person, despite her having an emo, gloomy person, is considered to be a terrible character? It's called depth, something that shows a person having more complex characteristics than just being one-note. Plus, if she didn't have feelings towards Zuko, Zuko and the others wouldn't have been able to escape from the Boiling Rock, and would've mist likely been killed in the boiling water underneath.
