This does seem to stretch out the design so I think one good work around would be to compress the image horizontally before applying it to the cylinder shape. It won’t be perfect but more than enough to convey the look of the mock-up if are simply trying to present the product.

To prevent your design from stretching. Double-click your smart object ( rectangle/cylinder ), select the crop tool and increase the canvas size on all sides. Then place your design on top and press control + s to save OR ( command + s ) on a Mac. Then go back to your mock-up to see the final results.

It's not necessary to create a shape layer and use the embeded tools to set the image in the cylinder but instead of using the shape use of the image direct and wrap it to set in the cylinder.
