Did You Know The Catholic Patron Saint for Beards Is a Bearded Woman?

According to pious legend, Saint Wilgefortis lived in the Roman province of Galicia which is approximately the present day Galicia in Spain.

Her father was a pagan Portuguese king with 9 daughters total and had promised a teen-aged Wilgefortis in marriage to the King of Sicily. Not wanting to be married off, she took a vow of virginity and prayed that God make her repulsive to her husband-to-be.

God answered her prayers, and Wilgefortis sprouted a beard. Her new appearance with a beard and mustache effectively ended the engagement, and in his anger over the engagement ending her father had her crucified.

Throughout the Middle Ages Saint Wilgefortis was venerated by people seeking relief from their tribulations, specifically women wanted to be disencumbered from abusive husbands. She is also the patron of facial hair.

Saint Wilgefortis’ feast day was traditionally celebrated on the 20th of July.

She is a very cool saint. One downside is that the Episcopal Church sees her as the patron saint of nonbianary and transgender people and that is just sad an unaccurate.

I heard she's a folk saint and didn't actually exist. Yet her name was removed from the Church calender in 1969. With the Church process for canonization being so rigorous, how is it possible that the Church managed to canonize a person, put her name on the calendar and then remove her, I'm assuming after finding out she didn't actually exist. Kindly clarify. I suffer from hirsutism myself due to genetics and pcos along with many other women out there. I absolutely hate how certain sects of people with their agendas of promoting and normalising the lgbtq lifestyle, make the story of this beautiful saint to be queer or non binary instead of what it actually is, martyrdom for Christ. This is a terrible suffering for many of us women with hirsutism. There are other causes of hirsutism besides pcos such as adrenal and ovarian tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypothyroidism, medications that cause an increase in androgens, insulin resistance etc. So I was looking for a Catholic saint whose intercession I could ask for and came across this saint. However, was sad to hear it's only folklore and the Church no longer recognizes her as a saint. Do provide other saint recommendations if you have any for women who suffer with hirsutism and the depression that results from it for the amount of time we spend each day just trying to cover it up and look presentable per society's social norm.

I mean, that’s some serious rejection if she would rather grow a beard and be crucified than marry you 😮

Pagans had multiple gods. Catholics have multiple saints who seem to fulfill the same roles. Coincidence?
