As much as I personally appretiate doing and viewing craftfully skilled figurative art, as an art history and philosophy graduate, this hating on «modern» art (anything after 1750-1800) is extremely dumb. Not only do modernist artworks hit people very hard, can be extremely beautiful, powerful and insightful, it’s also deeply reactionary and historically ignorant. Yes - lots of art is bad, boring and pretentious. Yes, capitalism corrupts some of the art world, but no, you don’t need to paint in one specific way, under one specific ideology, forever to create amazing and powerful artwork.
Rid yourself of that idea and be free to make something we have never seen before.

I feel like the part you missed was that art isnt a service. Most of the time an artist creates a piece for themselves and whether that's something the public might appreciate or see beauty in is totally subjective

A very strange analogy, a pilot is completely different to an artist. If I pilot doesn’t know what they’re doing, you’re dead. You can’t treat something with significantly less risk such as art to something that’s literally a safety hazard. Two completely different worlds. You shouldn’t treat them with the same judgement or mindset at all.

As an artist, I disagree with this. A lot of my best and most meaningful peices come to me as I am creating them. And I am not a modern artist, I draw mostly human figures with a lot of graphic details. Art doesn’t have to have a deeper meaning to be powerful. It just has to affect the person who is seeing it. If you connect with the art, you apply your own meaning to it.

As an abstract expressionist, I understand what he’s saying. When you look through art history and find Pollock or Rothko, you will also find their reasons for their art. You see what they were trying to achieve. Expressionists are thinkers, making this video correct. However, to discount modern art completely shows your lack of understanding about what art is.

Art doesn't necessarily have to be a profession it can be a hobby and if it makes money then so what? It's a person's choice to buy it. Also there's no real 'bad art' that is bad for your brain or else you could say classic renaissance art is damaging because its fine details and beauty can't be replicated today without immense amounts of money and time so trying would only lead to disappointment and settling for less.
