Experts are searching for a missing submersible in the area where noises have been heard beneath the surface, the US Coast Guard confirmed.
Captain Jamie Frederick told reporters in Boston on Wednesday the cause of the noises in the North Atlantic was still unconfirmed but insisted the efforts to find the five missing people aboard the Titan was still “a rescue mission”.
The vessel lost communication with tour operators on Sunday while about 435 miles south of St John’s, Newfoundland, during a voyage to the Titanic shipwreck off the coast of Canada.
The 6.7m (22ft)-long OceanGate Expeditions vessel, which has British billionaire adventurer Hamish Harding on board, may have less than 20 hours of oxygen left.
Five people, including a British billionaire, are currently onboard a trapped tourist vessel that went missing during a trip to the Titanic wreckage under the sea.
There is a major rescue operation underway to find the submersible Titan, with experts working around the clock to locate its whereabouts.
The Titanic shipwreck can be found just off the coast of Canada, and the sub is said to have lost communication with the Oceangate tour operators on Sunday, June 18 while about 435 miles south of St John’s, Newfoundland.
Five people are on board, including British businessman Hamish Harding, with the group paying close to £200k each for the experience.
The others on board are Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman and OceanGate’s chief executive and founder Stockton Rush, reportedly together with French submersible pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
