Sounding as fresh, young and vulnerable as it did in 1965 when it was first released by Hickory on the LP Fairytale, it tells the story of Donovan's difficult life as a teenage bohemian troubadour in Scotland. Homeless, poor, he had nothing but the company of a good friend, Gypsy Dave, as the two went about together "singing to the flowers." We can imagine the condemnation youths incur for choosing a wandering minstrel lifestyle over a safer, more conventional path. Young Donovan, who tried for the sun, now 71, seems to have won it.
