I kind of love that these Daily Penguins have become such a “ritual.” The Frieda footage, the “welcome, ” and so on. It’s very comforting.

I was assigned the work by Burckhardt in a graduate seminar called How to Live a Meaning Life which was a course on the intellectual history of modernity. The focus on Burckhardt's work was his concept of the exceptional all-sided man, and Burckhardt's view that Renaissance Italy birthed the individualism found in modernity. He argues that Renaissance Italy produced a self-conscious thirst for glory and the "modern sense of fame" .Burckhardt's critics either contend he failed to appreciate the development of individualism in antiquity and the Middle Ages, or that he jumped the gun and true individualism culminated with Enlightenment. That being said, Burckhardt's love of his subject is certainly infectious and makes for a enjoyable read.

I was just introducted to the great Burckhardt while reading 'Meaning in History' by Karl Lowith. It made me want to immediatelly drop Lowith and pick up Burckhardt, and I think I will do just that.

The whole "XYZ Surname" trend extends to my little corner of academia as well: F. D. M. Haldane, P. A. M. Dirac, and so on. I've been told that if you happen to have a lot of names, include as many initials as possible, since it makes it more likely for people to recognize your work. I suppose I should be publishing under R. J. B. Davis!
