Hey gang! Here's the next episode of Soloing Secrets with one of my favorite players, the legendary prog-rock pioneer Steve Howe, whose imaginative and inspiring musical talents shaped the overall sound of groups such as Yes, Asia, GTR, and many others!

This lesson features a deep dive into Steve's playing style in the 1970s with the legendary prog-rock mammoth Yes, and the ideas were pulled from three of their classic albums - including The Yes Album, Fragile, and Drama to be specific. The ideas/licks/phrases hiding in this episode include challenging sections from songs such as 'Long Distance Runaround,' 'Yours Is No Disgrace,' 'Würm,' 'Roundabout,' 'Perpetual Change,' 'Machine Messiah,' 'Heart Of The Sunrise,' and much more!

Needless to say, if you're a Yes/Steve Howe fan, progressive rock player/fan, or maybe just looking for some new challenges on the fretboard (regardless of which style you prefer) that were written by a bonafide progressive rock pioneer and legend, look no further - this is the lesson you've been searching for! Steve is my all time favorite prog rock guitarist. The right combo of quirky, rocky, country, jazzy and psychedelic. 71-78 he was untouchable.

The guy is an absolute melodic genius. Just like Lukather, when you think you've figured him out....he pulls another rabbit out. The guitar on perpetual change is nothing short of sorcery. Great lesson.

When I was a teen a bought a guitar magazine that had the cover story on Steve Howe (late 90s early 00s). Outside of the stuff you'd hear on classic rock FM, I wasn't a Yes or Steve fan at that point. There was a picture of Steve sitting amongst his guitar collection that has had an UNDUE influence on my guitar and gear buying habits.

Wonderful video. Steve is probably my favorite guitarist because of his unique, weirdness, played flawlessly. With Becks death I'm dreading the day Steve passes. Thanks for the video!

Steve is awesome! I only saw Yes once. When Trevor Rabin first joined. Good show, but I wish I could have seen them in the early 70s. I was a little too young. (1963)

Great video. It's a wonder to me that Steve Howe isn't mentioned much more often in the guitar world.

He’s such an original player, with a deep, deep knowledge of the instrument. He comes from such a non-blues angle, it’s challenging to figure him out (…with just a Blues based toolkit!). He really uses the entire neck? Genius musician…magician
Awesome having YOU breakdown some of his AMAZING runs, ideas and solos. Obviously, his work is so deep, you could make a series of these posts.
Appreciate your channel, so much real content. You’re an amazing player and teacher

I was just thinking of that wonderful "Starship Troopers" outro a few days ago! I love Yes and Steve Howe! Fantastic Lesson! Thanks, David!

My Favourite guitarist. As you mentioned, his acoustic world is also amazing. Then also, the Lap Steel and Pedal Steel! Just Brilliant

Thanks for this one David - great song and solo choices. Putting Steve in the context of the early 70s, his approach to playing rock music was very different to pretty much everyone else around at that time. Steve and his namesake (Hackett) made budding guitarist kids rethink how and what they wanted to play and learn.
