Fauci Says Current Vaccines Should Work Against New Covid Variants

Dr. Anthony Fauci is back in the White House briefing room.

Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, was tasked by President Joe Biden to give an update on the coronavirus pandemic after largely being sidelined in recent months by former president Donald Trump.

Fauci said the new administration would "be completely open and honest" in dealing with the pandemic and, in an implicit rebuke to the Trump administration, said everything now would be "based on science and evidence."

Asked if he feels less constrained dealing with the new administration, Fauci answered: "The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know...what the science is and know that's it, let the science speak, it is somewhat of a liberating feeling."

Fauci was repeatedly attacked by Trump for breaking with his rosy view of the pandemic, provided an update on the new, more contagious strains of the virus, which has now claimed the lives of more than 400,000 Americans.

He said the U.S. remains in a very serious state with regard to the global pandemic but he said right now, it appears the case numbers "might actually be plateauing in the sense of turning around."

Fauci was also asked if the Biden administration is able to work with any of the plans left by the previous administration on vaccine production and distribution or if they just did not exist.

Fauci was clear that the new team "is not working from scratch," and it would be incorrect to say that there was not a plan in existence.

"We're we're coming in with fresh ideas, but also some ideas that were not bad ideas with with the with the previous administration," he said.
