I had to travel miles away to film the world's only moving mud spring as it tries to swallow California's critical infrastructure. You heard me right, it's the only moving mud puddle in the WORLD.

It's not a mystery. From a quick search it's located in the Dalton Trough which is a geologically unstable area due to the San Andreas fault. This particular case is being attributed to carbon dioxide being released underground and has been around since 1953 but didn't start moving until 2015/2016 after seismic activity. For those more curious about it, it's called the Niland Geyser.

that thing's going straight for Eustace and Muriel's house in the middle of nowhere . nothing can stand in its way .

As a geologist, I am not not surprised that sheet wall did absolutely nothing

Im guessing, the geyser outlet is slowly cutting its way closer to its source. Instead of fighting it they need to reroute the tracks through where it has already passed.

The sheet wall company was laughing all the way to the bank

The number one thing nature and physics teaches you: **Do not underestimate the power of water and a lot of time.**

It's coming from inside the Earth.
Engineer: yeah 75 feet ought to do it.

Who was the brainiac to stop the train RIGHT THERE?! 😂😂😂

everybody gangsta til the mud puddle starts walking

It’s coming up from underground. Not starting from the top, going down 75ft, then rising back up. Because of that it won’t matter if they made it 100ft if the water bed is deeper than that.

Engineer; What a sweet place to park! We have front row parking with a first class view!

This was South of Palm Springs on the East side of the Salton Sea (North of Niland). That area has significant geothermal activity along with a number of hot springs. My friend has a place at Bombay Beach. We drove his dune buggy to see this (HiWay 111 was closed in both directions for traffic at the time so this was the only way to get there). Pretty impressive watching basically underground lava heated water creating mud pots.

Nature: _sends mud from the centre of the earth_

Union Pacific: _installs sixty foot fence_

The perfect summation of my experiences with freight rail - a disaster situation and the train just sitting there while people yell for it to move.

"Hmm this looks like a nice place to park my train"
-said the engineer

A sentient, moving mud puddle sounds like a Star Trek villain-of-the-week.

Seems like it would make more sense to move the tracks to the other side of it and let it go on it's merry way. They could always move them back after it's passed that area. Pretty sure that wall cost 50 times more.

That solution seems like trying to stop a freight train with a Toyota Prius parked on the tracks.
