What is a DBA?

In business, DBA is an abbreviation for “Doing Business As” also known as a “fictitious name”. DBA simply means that you have put the community on notice that you are operating a business under a particular trade name that may or may not look exactly like your actual business name as filed with the Secretary of State, if you have formed a business entity. In other words, it is an alias for your business. In order to obtain a DBA, you need to file to register your fictitious name with the Secretary of State. It is important, before filing, to ensure that you are not filing to register a name that is already registered and in use, either in your state or federally in the federal trademark database. An attorney can assist with this search, with advertising the fictitious name, and with filing a fictitious name with the Secretary of State.
