After US and EU, Canada Announces 100% Tariff on Chinese Electric Vehicles
Canada has announced that it will impose a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles starting October 1. The country joins the US and European Union in toughening trade restrictions on China. The new Canadian tariffs will apply to all EVs made in China, including Tesla. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the tariffs aim to address what he sees as Beijing’s unfair trade practices and overcapacity. Recently, several Western leaders have expressed concerns about Chinese manufacturers overproducing goods, which has overwhelmed the global market and harmed other manufacturers. In addition to EVs, the Trudeau government will also levy a 25% duty on Chinese steel and aluminium. China’s embassy in Canada has criticised the move as "protectionist," arguing that it violates World Trade Organization rules.
