Although not yet fully ratified, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) should allow Canada and the European Union to boost their trade, especially in meat exports. But at what cost? In Europe, opponents of CETA focus on fears over Canadian beef such as the use of growth hormones. But over in Canada, farmers criticise the non-tariff barriers imposed by the EU and say the win-win deal that was promised is taking too long to materialise. Our correspondents went to meet them.

Our Standards USED to mimic that of the EU... It's due to US pressure that our meat quality is lowering. We should mimic the standards of the EU and require the same for all meat coming into Canada. That will increase the price of our meat abroad. Our farmers have been warned to diversify their products for years, all the farmers that don't heed that warning are losing subsidies.

Is this why Newfoundland is seeing non Canadian fish in our markets??
Also, I would love for Canadian meat to NOT have growth hormone in it. As a non Amercian nation we should have higher standards for food control.

For the health of consumers and the planet, adopt the EU standards. Don’t let greed win. The health of US consumers is your indicator.
