“Per diem” is a Latin phrase meaning “for the day”. Many jobs will pay a per diem rate when you travel for business to cover for additional out-of-pocket costs like meals. Things that are normally arranged & paid for ahead of time (hotel, airfare, etc) are *not* considered part of your per diem.

It is a standard financial term.

Per diem covers your expenses… hotels paid for separately… atleast a that’s how it’s always been at the jobs I’ve taken

No no it doesn’t cover hotel. Company covers hotel. Per diem is food and pay for going out of your normal area. I worked from LA in Austin per diem was $65 dollars a day. I asked for it all at the end. Because Texas is way cheaper than California. It was a nice little bonus when I got back to LA.
