Voting doesn't need to be efficient, it needs to accurately reflect the uncoerced will of the people. This is the way to do it.

Given the fervor surrounding Taiwanese elections, full transparency of the process and leaving no room for doubt is paramount.

Taiwan's 2004 election was as close as 50.1% vs 49.9% (a difference of just a tad more than 25K votes in absolute numbers), and that election itself was fraught with controversy. This "old school" way of voting (and counting) means that people are still willing to trust that the results are accurate, and there are physical votes as evidence when things inevitably went to court.

With that kind of history, Taiwanese are reluctant to change the voting process, even if things like electronic or mail-in could make a lot of things easier.

They’re not volunteers. They are civil servants including teachers. And trust me it’s the most efficient way if you do it right. The way we count the votes manually is based years of election experience.

I have trouble with what she said about "Not as efficient". The system is actually a lot more efficient than US. The vote tally was completed within a few hours with very high level of trust. In US, it is now becoming an election month now. And there are almost for sure disputes and legal actions to no end. How can that be more efficient?

The results are out and announced in 3 to 4 hours, pretty efficient to me.
