Avoid this Man in Sri Lanka! (Colombo Beach SCAM) 🇱🇰

I arrived in Sri Lanka on a whim having had enough of Chennai. As I checked into my place in the capital city, Colombo, I was excited to learn of a local buddhist ceremony that would be taking place that night.

With a couple of hours to explore, I headed down to Galle Face Beach to meet with the locals and gather my first impressions of Sri Lanka. After chatting with a friendly local lady selling cold coconuts, I was approached by a curious old man who introduced himself as a Catholic by the name of 'Sylvester' - who ended up being a scammer.

Having called his bluff when I later saw trying to run the same routine on another unsuspecting victim by the beach, I decided to head off and get something to eat (avoid this man in Sri Lanka!).

Since the first place had apparently shut down, I ventured towards a local's place known as Raheema Hotel - confusingly, not a hotel at all, but an old-school eatery.

My first impressions of Sri Lankan food were just as good as the weather - I tried egg roti, samosas, sambar, dhal, and the most incredible chicken biryani, not forgetting the delicious desserts and my first ever falooda drink to finish.

Full of some of the best (and spiciest!) food in south Asia, it was time for the Navam Perahera & Vesak Festival celebrations to start back towards Gangaramaya Temple, overlooking the lake opposite Colombo City Centre Mall.

There was elephants, fire and traditional dancing into the early hours - and even whips!

Bro that orange colour dish you thought made from dry fish and the guy said yes lol, it’s not made from fish, that’s scrapped fresh coconut mixed with crushed onion, crushed chilli and lime juice. You can also add a pick of Maldive dry fish to have a sort of crunch in the middle. It’s call “POL SAMBAL” coconut sambal which is in the top 5 dishes in Sri Lanka I bet 🎉

Sri Lanka is getting a bad name because of these scammers. The tourism has fallen into a deep hole because of these people. You as a tourist should complain this to the nearest police station. A few scammers got arrested recently due to the complaints .

Amidst all the positive things to experience in SL, unfortunately, there are scammers, stalkers begging for money, and some vendors/ tuktuk drivers who may resort to overcharge tourists. I hope you won't have to endure such experiences for the rest of your stay. And thanks so much for exploring and exposing the best things SL has to offer to the rest of the world. Influencers such as yourself in a way help us locals residing abroad to get a taste of home 🏠

First of all I love all the details you capture in your videos. Keep rocking.
As for this senior who showed you some of his prescriptions relating to his health, the chances of him genuinely suffering from age related health issues are probably true. Hence him asking you for some financial help, given his age, in all probabilities deem as legitimate. There are scammers who do take advantage of local and foreign tourists but sometimes a little help would be a game changer for people who are below the poverty line. I sincerely hope that you are never ever scammed, period. Incidentally, I would have loved to see you buy some food and a cup of tea for the senior in conclusion. Travel safe and keep in touch. when Sri Lanka economy was in danger and no one on earth was helping India helped with grants and loans of several billion dollars and still giving. Indian Foreign Minister himself went to Sri Lanka with massive petrol tankers. On July 08, 2023, expressing his gratitude to "trustworthy friend" India for saving Sri Lanka and preventing "another bloodbath for all of us" during its unprecedented economic crisis last year, Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has said that not a single nation has extended that kind of assistance to Colombo as done by New Delhi.
