US vetoes Palestinian bid: Widely-supported full un membership blocked

The United States has vetoed a draft resolution at the UN Security Council, which called for Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations.
The US was the only country to vote against it.
12 members voted in favour, with the UK and Switzerland abstaining.

The Security Council's major responsibility is to ensure world peace. Why has it been empowered to grant membership or refuse it. The UN is used by the US not only to deny security to Palestinians but also to prevent them from becoming the UN member.
